What Do You Want?

How often has someone asked you, “Well, what do you want to do?” How often has the answer been, “I don’t know.” Settling on a dream isn’t always easy. It’s an overwhelming prospect.  Admitting you have a dream isn’t easy either.  And saying it out loud can be downright terrifying.  It takes practice.

More often than not, we have a better idea of what we don’t want to do than what we do.  But  consider the fact that a shift in perspective can be enough to change everything.

If you don’t know what you want to do, perhaps you can access how you want to feel.  And if you can pinpoint a thought that makes you feel bad, perhaps you can shift that thought or perspective to one that makes you feel better.  The way you feel will guide your entire experience.

Worry, fear, and physical or perceived obstacles all stand in our way of feeling as good as we possibly can.  But, we can commit to reaching for that better feeling thought in spite of negative influences.  We can stay the course, commit to never giving up, no matter what.

Sometimes saying, “I will see it through,” is actually easier than dealing with the guilt and regret that comes with giving up.  I am a writer.  And I’ve written two as-yet-unpublished novels.  I have committed to the idea that I only fail when I stop trying.  It takes a lot of pressure off, because it reminds me that I am in control.  I control the effort.  And I control how I feel about the effort.  It goes for other things too.  I only fail at feeling good when I stop making an effort to feel good.  It’s always possible, when you’re feeling bad, to reach for a better-feeling thought.  You can choose to feel better.

Writing prompt:

Create your vision…

You may know what you want.  You may not.  But you probably have an idea of how you want to feel.  Imagine your perfect day, from start to finish.  Write it down.  Write down your dream routine from the moment you wake up to the moment your head hits the pillow.  If your career, relationship, or health goals are hard to access, imagine how you want to feel.  What do you feel like when you are living and thinking at your most blissful level?
